Here's an interesting article about Universal's Cactus Data Shield:

Apparently, DVD drives see through the copyp-rotection. The author was
testing on Windows systems but demonstrated that all computers with DVD
drives were able to play and rip tracks from the protected CDs with the
exception of the first track which remained unplayable.
