(1) Dan Kohn has come up with his punchline at last in his series of
articles in TidBits.

He suggests four ways that the authors of freely-copyable goods might
be funded in future (my re-interpretation):

- Funding from the government (i.e. indirectly from taxation)
- Direct donations (from one or many `patrons')
- From non-profit organizations who raise money for one large goal,
then distribute it to smaller groups.
- By selling associated products or services (like concert tickets,
  T-shirts, etc, etc).

(2) In the December edition of Sound-on-Sound (not in newsagents for a
week or so), in the "Cutting Edge" section written by Dave Shapton
there is a discussion of copy-protected CDs.

"It's a complex subject, but my views about it are simple: it's
practically impossible to copy-protect music. But what you can do
very effectively is annoy the very people who are quite prepared to
pay for the use of music."

He points out the existence of the digital play option on Windows
Media Player 7, which effectively rips the audio from the CD in
real-time, giving better quality by bypassing the CD-ROM's converters,
and how this feature would be affected by copy-protected CDs.

He expresses alarm at the possibility of WMA files being included on
dual-format audio CDs, pointing out that the CD format has been around
for 18 years, and 18-year-old CDs still play, but this guarantee
cannot be given for WMA files.

He ends:

"... you might buy a new CD player and find that none of your
`protected' disks work. At which point I hope you'll politely but
firmly ask the record company for a refund."

Sound-on-Sound is the number one UK magazine for people who work in
music recording and production, so this message will reach a lot of
these people.
