You should try ringing them -- to me it seemed a little bit more than
offering a service.  Even though I explained that I was maintaining
web pages on the problem, and I just wanted to confirm that
replacement CDs were available through them, they kept pushing for my
name and address.

Agreed -- taking it back to the shop is the best approach, by far.
