I don't see how the issue of brand value -- and certainly
the name `Sony' will be a very valuable `asset' for Sony
-- affects the issue of how a company which both
manufactures hardware and distributes content should
analyse how changes to the copyright law will affect the
effectiveness of both sides of the business.
I think that the bit I'm missing is that, of course, Sony
is big enough that it expects to be able to force the
adoption of standards which are restricted (for instance,
by patents) and use this to create a competitive advantage
for itself in the marketplace. Cf. Microsoft and the PC
boot loader.
