I went to the Judge Institute in Cambridge last Friday, at which there was
a sort of mini-hustings on the software patent issue. James Heald gave a
talk on the subject, then the MEP candidates gave their positions.
The Green party candidate was against them and reasonably well-informed.
The Lib Dem, Andrew Duff, was rather equivocal about the whole thing. He
said at one point that copyright protection meant that patents were
unnecessary for software, but spoilt it by going on to talk about stronger
IP protection. We had the opportunity to re-educate him afterwards. :)
The conservatives sent a genial chap in a white blazer who said, roughly:
- he didn't understand the issue
- he thought patents were very important
- he was going to do what ever Malcolm Harbour said.
Labour didn't bother to send anyone, neither did the other fringe parties
(although they may not have been invited). I think we can assume Labour
MEPs will follow the McCarthy voting schedule.
Time to make up your minds!
Pete
